Everything barristers need. Nothing they don't.
Bar Time is built around the real workflow of modern practice — from recording a unit of time to sending a summary to your clerk.
Matter-based time recording
Every time entry in Bar Time is attached to a specific matter. When you log work, you choose the matter it belongs to — giving you a clean, auditable record of what was done, by whom, and when.
There are no free-floating entries and no ambiguity about which case a block of time relates to. At any point you can see the full history for a matter: every entry, its date, duration, and notes.
Your billing position is always clear — no reconstruction, no guesswork.
Billed and unbilled control
Bar Time tracks whether each time entry has been billed or remains outstanding. When work is included in a clerk summary, entries are marked as billed. Unbilled entries stay clearly visible until they are accounted for.
You can also correct billing state where entries need to be revisited. The system is designed to support accurate records, not to lock you into irreversible actions.
Nothing gets missed. Your outstanding work is always visible.
Send-to-clerk workflow
When you are ready to send work to your clerk, Bar Time provides a structured summary workflow. You select the entries you want to include, review the totals, and dispatch a summary directly from within the application.
The summary is structured and consistent — no reformatting, no manual compilation. Your clerk receives exactly what they need to update their records.
Clerk handoffs take minutes, not half an hour of spreadsheet work.
Task management and reminders
Create tasks with due dates, optional matter links, and clear current or done status. Keep operational actions visible alongside fee-earning work so deadlines are not lost in separate systems.
Where email reminders are enabled, Bar Time can send scheduled prompts to the selected recipient so important actions are surfaced before they are missed.
Tasks, reminders, and matter context stay in one place — with less administrative drift.
Protected matter access
Some matters require stricter confidentiality. Mark a matter as protected and control exactly who can access it.
No one can see any of your matters unless you grant read-only access. Protected matters can be hidden even from your own read-only users. Bar Time platform administrators cannot access protected matter content.
Sensitive cases stay confidential, with access controlled by you.
Dormancy awareness
Matters with no recorded time for a defined period are flagged as dormant. Set a default threshold and override per matter where needed.
Dormancy flags help you keep your matter list accurate — identifying work that may need chasing or cases that can be archived.
Your active matter list reflects reality, not wishful thinking.
Access control
Use roles and read-only permissions to control what each user can see and do.
No one can see any of your matters unless you grant access. Protected matters can be hidden even from your own read-only users. Bar Time platform administrators cannot access protected matter content.
Each user sees only what you explicitly allow.
Audit-aware workflows
Protected matter access is audit-logged so you have a clear record of who viewed what and when.
Audit logging applies to sensitive access behaviours — not every click — so the logs remain meaningful and actionable rather than noise.
Every protected matter view by an admin is logged. Full accountability, no ambiguity.
Defaults and settings
Set defaults for dormancy and access behaviour, with per-matter overrides where needed.
This gives consistent controls without forcing repetitive setup on every matter.
Consistent standards, with flexibility where it counts.
